In his research, Hiroyuki seeks to understand how the coal mining development and the related urbanisation process shape (and continuously reshape) the specific coal urbanism in Tete province, Mozambique. While the extraction of green minerals has been gaining scholarly attention more recently, the implications of global decarbonisation efforts on regions in which conventional energy sources are extracted remains less understood. The research therefore sets out to understand how the energy transition process promotes restructuring coal mining region such as Tete. We explore how the debate on the energy transition in the international arena and the expected decarbonisation process affect the everyday life of the inhabitants in the Mozambican coal frontier by analysing the socio-spatial transformation, labour relations, and resource governance.
